"Stephanie Day" At King Kone On Sunday

King Kone is raising money for the Stephanie Crispinelli Humanitarian Fund on Sunday June 5th. According to the Facebook post linked at King Kone: 

King Kone is having their 2nd annual benefit day for Stephanie's mission. All proceeds from that day will help support and fulfill the foundation. Please come and show your support for this great cause!


As many recall, Stephanie Crispinelli, a 19 year-old college sophomore from Somers, NY, was in Haiti helping orphans when she died in the earthquake on January 12, 2010.  Her mission lives on through the Stephanie Crispinelli Humanitarian Fund. Its Facebook page is here.  Ms. Crispinelli worked at King Kone the summer before she died.

26th Lasdon Memorial Day Antiques Fair

Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial located in Somers, NY is the horticultural hub of  Westchester County.  The site will again host a Antique Fair with up to 85 booths on Memorial Day. Show hours are 10 to 5, with the last admission at 4:30. The admission fee of seven dollars will benefit The Glass House Fund at Lasdon Park. According to LewisboroLedger.com, a partial list of dealers expected include: 

Iron Renaissance, offering vintage quality restored garden and patio furniture; Sugar Princess, offering Americana, vintage toys, American art pottery, and primitives; and Maile’s Antiques offering 16th to 19th Century maps, Audubon and Denton prints, and natural history prints including botanicals and shells, also assorted ephemera. Vintage Wears will present jewelry, pocketbooks, lighting, bathroom fixtures, fireplace accessories, doorbells, curtain tiebacks and architectural items. What Was Is Vintage will bring antique costume jewelry and art deco objects; and Forget- Me-Nots returns with red, white, blue and brown Staffordshire fine china and Roseville pottery. Annual Memorial Day Parade In Somers, NY

The American Legion Richard Somers Post is hosting the Annual Memorial Day Parade for the Town of Somers, NY. The Parade will begin at 10:00 am at the Somers Middle School and conclude at Ivandell Cemetery. Three To Be Inducted Into SEF Hall Of Fame On Saturday

The Somers Education Foundation (SEF) will induct three persons into its Hall of Fame at its 11th Annual Gala Dinner, Dance & Auction on May 21.  This year’s inductees are Marie Ciota, Susan Kolar, and Vinny Liscio.  The Hall of Fame honors teachers, administrators and community members who have made significant contributions over many years to supporting the Somers Central School District.

Profiles of the honorees from the SEF press release:  

Marie Ciota has been teaching in Somers since 1982, both at Primrose Elementary School and more recently Somers Intermediate School. She has had an enormous impact on hundreds of students. She was part of the group that helped coordinate and pave the way for full day kindergarten to become a reality in Somers. While teaching, she researched the life of Somers resident Caroline Wright Reis because she wanted her kindergarten students to know  more about her. This research became her first published book, A Girl to Remember. Ciota also became interested in the “Habits of Mind” after the Primrose Leadership Team (of which she was a member) went to a workshop. Further research resulted in Ciota’s second book, The Mindful Garden, a book of poems for elementary aged children to help teach the Habits of Mind. She resides in Somers and has four grown children.

Susan Kolar, currently Chief Financial Officer of the Food Network and Cooking Channel in New York City, has been a Somers resident since 1994 and has three grown children. She became Treasurer of the Somers Education Foundation in 2002 and held the position for seven years. During that time, under her leadership, SEF saw a major increase in revenue,  projects and  grant activities. She was previously a volunteer in Somers High School to help enable teacher –parent communication. She was also a parent member of the Somers High School Special Education Committee. Prior to the Food Network, she was the Chief Administrative Officer of Sesame Workshop, a non-profit organization whose mission is to use educational media to help children reach their highest potential.

Vinny Liscio is a 31-year resident of Somers, where he raised his three grown daughters. He is a past president and 21- year member of the Somers Lions Club  He is most proud of his efforts to help bring the residents of Somers and many social, community and philanthropic organizations and town officials together to make the annual Independence Day Celebration and Lynn Adams Memorial 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk a reality. Liscio is also an avid cyclist and participated in the 150-mile Journey for the Heart Tour for Friends of Karen, which raised over $180,000 for the organization’s outreach programs.  His passion for community service and creating a better world for his grandchildren and beyond have brought him to his current project, ConsciousWine, an organic/biodynamic wine education and information website, due to launch this spring.

Tickets to the Gala Dinner Dance & Auction are $100 per person and are available  by registering at www.sefny.org/gala/ or by emailing sarenameyer@sefny.org.  The Gala’s honorary chairman is Somers resident Lee Goldberg, the meteorologist at WABC-TV, Channel 7 in New York City.

SEF is a not for profit, tax exempt organization founded in 1994, comprised of parents, school representatives and community members. SEF supports the Somers Central School District by raising funds for specific student and teacher-initiated projects that enrich the education experience and are not funded by the district budget or other school groups.

Holocaust Remembrance Day In Somers NY

"Sitting here I cannot believe I am alive. It is hard to explain and to tell things what had happened," said the keynote speaker at Holocaust Remembrance Day, according to a recent LoHud.com story.    

The annual event sponsored by the Somers Holocaust Memorial Commission was held on May 5th at Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers, NY.   The Evening of Remembrance included prayers, music and a candle lighting ceremony.  Student project awards were presented to students from Kennedy Catholic, North Salem and Somers High Schools.  The keynote speaker was Benjamin Levin, a Holocaust survivor who lives in Ossining.

This excerpt from United States Holocaust Memorial Museum briefly describes the Holocaust: 

The Holocaust was the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. "Holocaust" is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by fire." The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were "racially superior" and that the Jews, deemed "inferior," were an alien threat to the so-called German racial community.

During the era of the Holocaust, German authorities also targeted other groups because of their perceived "racial inferiority": Roma (Gypsies), the disabled, and some of the Slavic peoples (Poles, Russians, and others). Other groups were persecuted on political, ideological, and behavioral grounds, among them Communists, Socialists, Jehovah's Witnesses, and homosexuals.

Somers Man Is Citizen Of Year For Mount Kisco Chamber

Somers resident Bill Harden is the Mount Kisco Chamber of Commerce  2011 Citizen of the Year.  He will be honored tonight, May 5, at the 44th Annual Citizen of the Year Dinner Dance held at BMW Mt. Kisco.   

Harden is the founder and owner of Accel Printing & Graphics Corp. in Mount Kisco. At the event, the Chamber will also honor Mount Kisco Child Care Center as Outstanding Non Profit of the Year.


The Chamber's web site says this about the award and Harden:

Each year, the Mount Kisco Chamber of Commerce takes great pride in awarding the Citizen of the Year honorees. These honors are bestowed by the Chamber on a group or an individual who has distinguished themselves by contributing their time and talent to benefit the entire Mt. Kisco community.


The Mount Kisco Chamber of Commerce is proud to honor Bill Harden as our 2011 Citizen of the Year. Bill was born on Staten Island and attended the New York City School system. He went to
Wagner College (BS) and NYU, served in the U.S. Navy (ONI) after going to OSC Naval Academy. He worked for Union Carbide (mergers and acquisitions), John Nuveen (Investment Banking), Advanced Computer Techniques (Partner) and local businessman (Printing). The family moved to Chappaqua in 1967 with lovely wife and three children. Bill has been a local businessman since 1976 and Chamber member, (served as President for four years) since 1984. Accel Printing and Graphics Corporation is owned and operated by Bill and his wife, Ann in Mt. Kisco since 1978.


Now residing in Heritage Hills, Bill is a fanatic tennis player and charity auctioneer. His “Fun Raising” auctions support many local Charities and Non-Profit organizations. He is past president of MKCC, Board member of Northern Westchester Business Group, member and past trustee of The First Congregational Church, Chappaqua.

Regional Quilt Show at Kennedy Catholic

More than 250 quilts will be on display this weekend at World of Quilts XXXII  presented by the Northern Star Quilters’ Guild of Somers, NY.  The event takes place at Kennedy Catholic High School on April 30 and May 1.  Contemporary quilt maker Rosalie Dace from Durban, South Africa  will speak both days.  The public is invited.  More information is at the web site of the Northern Star Quilters’ Guild

Call For Volunteers: Trail Blazing At Angle Fly Preserve On April 3rd

Trail blazers wanted. Last month, scores of volunteers built a bridge over the Angle Fly Brook in Angle Fly Preserve in Somers, NY. The effort was both impressive and festive. The bridge is complete but trails work needs to be done. Volunteer this Sunday, April 3, starting from 10am until mid-afternoon.
