Somers Relay For Life A Great Success

From the ExaminerNews.com:  The Somers, NY community came out in droves to the inaugural Relay for Life held at Somers Middle School last night [June 3].  Hundreds attended and raised more than $100,000 for the American Cancer Society, a total that obliterated the targeted $50,000 goal.  Read more in the June 4 story by Faith Ann Butcher in the ExaminerNews.com,Inaugural Somers Relay for Life a Success.

"Stephanie Day" At King Kone On Sunday

King Kone is raising money for the Stephanie Crispinelli Humanitarian Fund on Sunday June 5th. According to the Facebook post linked at King Kone: 

King Kone is having their 2nd annual benefit day for Stephanie's mission. All proceeds from that day will help support and fulfill the foundation. Please come and show your support for this great cause!


As many recall, Stephanie Crispinelli, a 19 year-old college sophomore from Somers, NY, was in Haiti helping orphans when she died in the earthquake on January 12, 2010.  Her mission lives on through the Stephanie Crispinelli Humanitarian Fund. Its Facebook page is here.  Ms. Crispinelli worked at King Kone the summer before she died.

Hope For Change Foundation Makes Grant

The Hope For Change Foundation, based in Somers, NY, recently presented the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Sleepy Hollow with $5,000 to fund a women’s survivorship research project, according to the Tarrytown Sleepy Hollow Patch.

School Supply Drive for Stephanie Crispinelli School

Stephanie Crispinelli, a teen from Somers, NY, was in Haiti helping orphans when she died in the earthquake on January 12, 2010. To continue her the good works, friends and family are building a second school in Jamaica. School supplies, such as crayons, construction paper and pencils, are needed. School Supply Drive for Stephanie Crispinelli School

Dear Friends,

Last year the Somers Community was very generous with their school supply donations for the children in Jamaica. We shipped 2400 pounds of school supplies and books to the first school that was built in Stephanie Crispinelli’s honor.

Stephanie’s family and friends are joining together to continue her passion.

We are collecting school supplies to send to Jamaica for the second Stephanie’s Place school to be built this May. I have the honor of joining the Crispinelli’s this year. We don’t need any books this time because we have so many wonderful books left from last year. The Children will have a new school but no supplies, that’s where we come in. Some suggestions would be: crayons, pencils, markers, notebooks, construction paper, and educational tools. The Dollar stores are wonderful places to get these items. The school age children are from 4-12 years old. Help us continue Stephanie’s work. The collection bins will be located at Primrose, Somers Intermediate School, and the Somers Library until April 15th.

Teen's Death in Haiti Remembered; Her Mission Lives On

Stephanie Crispinelli, a teen from Somers, NY, was in Haiti helping orphans when she died in the earthquake on January 12, 2010. Support from the Somers community helped the family cope with the loss of the 19 year-old college sophomore. Her mission lives on through the Stephanie Crispinelli Humanitarian Fund. Her mother wrote this on the Facebook page of the organization set up in her honor.

My family and I cannot thank you enough for all your prayers, concern and compassion during that time of anxious waiting and over this past year. We are blessed to have so much support and prayer power! We have seen God work in amazing ways this year. Stephanie’s Mission is alive and well even though she isn’t physically here to participate. In one year, she has built “Steph’s Place”, a school in Race Course Jamaica accommodating eighty-seven children age 3-6 years old. She has provided J-term scholarships for three Lynn University students to go on mission trips similar to the ones that motivated Stephanie. She has provided a humanitarian intern project in Nicaragua for a Somers (NY) High School student. She has put a Steph’s Caring Bear into the arms of hundreds of hurting children in hospitals or traveling by ambulance or Angel Flight. She has provided medical relief for children in La Carpio, Nicaragua. Property has recently been acquired near “Steph’s Place” where she will build homes for three families. She will build another “Steph’s Place” school in Jamaica in May. All this and more has been done in one short year to honor and continue Stephanie’s mission of helping the poorest of the poor.

Somers Students Donate Books to Walden and Pines Bridge Schools

Children at the Pines Bridge and Walden schools at Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES giggled in delight as they swam in a sea of colorful picture books donated by Borders Books and Somers High School students on Wednesday, Dec. 22nd.

The STAT Club (Students Taking Action Today) at Somers High School collected new children's books including favorites like Curious George, Where the Wild Things Are, Madeline and Dr. Seuss and delivered them to children at the Pines Bridge and Walden Schools at BOCES in Yorktown. Borders Books in Mount Kisco generously donated 150 books for the effort.

STAT was originally formed by a few students at Somers High School who were committed to helping teens in a Nicaraguan Refugee Camp in Costa Rica. It has blossomed over time into one of the largest and busiest clubs at the high school, with students participating in all types of outreach including working in a Soup Kitchen in Peekskill, collecting prom dresses for students who cannot afford them and sending supplies to soldiers in Iraq.

Senior Hall of Fame Honorees Include Loomis of Somers

Westchester County held its 28th annual Senior Hall of Fame luncheon on Dec. 3 at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown. Among the 30 seniors from the “Class of 2010” who were inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame was:

Sue Loomis of Somers is a volunteer with Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester. She has visited many hospice patients at the Somers Manor Nursing Home since 2004 where she talks with them, reads, plays cards or simply listens to their fears and concerns. Before she retired, Loomis had worked 19 years at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital as secretary to the medical director and medical staff coordinator.

‘Race to Nowhere' screening in Somers

SOMERS - The Somers High School PTSA is screening the documentary, "Race to Nowhere," on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Somers High School Auditorium.

The main message of "Race to Nowhere" is about the high stakes and pressure in the nation's schools and on students. As a result, the film suggests there is an epidemic of unhealthy, disengaged and unprepared young people. The documentary was made to bring communities together to raise awareness, generate dialogue and let people know that they are not alone in this "Race to Nowhere."

Somers rallies again for cancer-stricken college student

Nice article by Barbara Livingston Nackman in LoHud.com on Thursday reporting on the support of the Somers, NY community for the Monte family as their 20 year-old Hanna Monte deals with treatment for colon cancer. As stated in the story, the Monte family is overwhelmed, but not surprised, by the support. Monte's dad, Christopher, said. "People in this town are just like this. They are not fair-weather friends. ... I can't say how much this has helped us."

Clubs and organizations, led by the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce, are organizing the Somers First Block Party to benefit Hannah Monte in her fight against cancer. The event is scheduled for Sunday October 3rd on Tomahawk Street.
