Somers Dead Last in Recycling
Westchester County may brag about a record setting year in 2009 for recycling. Sadly, numbers released in April show Somers dead last among recycling by municipalities at a woeful 17 percent of solid waste recycled. The average was 49 percent with Bedford checking in with a high of 74 percent. Second worst is Lewisboro at 23 percent.

Friday Night At The Movies
The Somers Library will be showing the movie Outsourced on May 21, 2010 at 7:30PM. Outsourced is a satire about the human side of contemporary frustrations associated with the global economy and stars Ayesha Dharker, Josh Hamilton, Larry Pine, Asif Basra, Matt Smith.
IMDB gives it 7.1 stars. Rotten Tomatoes says "Outsourced is a charming and lighthearted comedy that appeals because of its timeliness and strong cast of likeable characters."

Westchester County Parks Department announced its Battle of the Bands for Teens at Playland Park. Details according to press release:
If you think your band has what it takes to wow the crowds at Playland’s Music Tower Theater, send a sample of your best music and you may be chosen to compete in the annual Battle of the Bands on Tuesday, July 20, at Playland Park in Rye .
Music samples on CD must be received at the County Parks Department by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30.
Music samples can be mailed or delivered to Westchester County Parks, 25 Moore Avenue , Mount Kisco , NY 10549 , attention Battle of the Bands.

Somers school budget calls for nearly 3 percent tax hike

SOMERS — The district is asking voters to approve a nearly $79 million budget that officials say would maintain programs while spending less than this year. The spending plan for the 2010-11 school year reflects negotiated salary freezes from all staff and other savings that carved $3 million from the current budget. "We are asking voters to authorize the district to spend less money than this year," Schools Superintendent Joanne Marien said. She said in her 16 years with the district, this is the first time she could recall a proposed reduction of this magnitude. To accomplish the cuts, the district plans to eliminate 12 positions.
